Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 1, Verse 7
In Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1, Verse 7 of the Bhagavad Gita, Dhritarashtra, the blind king, inquires from his charioteer Sanjaya about the activities of the warriors on both sides of the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Dhritarashtra is anxious to know what happened when his sons, the Kauravas, and their cousins, the Pandavas, assembled for battle.
Here’s the verse:
“अस्माकं तु विशिष्टा ये तान्निबोध द्विजोत्तम।
नायका मम सैन्यस्य संज्ञार्थं तान्ब्रवीमि ते।।” (Bhagavad Gita 1.7)
Translation:
“O best of the brahmanas (Sanjaya), behold these mighty warriors of ours, who are especially distinguished by their greatness. I will tell you the names of the principal warriors among us, who are to be counted as leaders of my army.”
In this verse, Dhritarashtra instructs Sanjaya to observe and identify the distinguished warriors from their side (the Kauravas) who are leading the army. He expresses his eagerness to know about the prominent warriors among their ranks.
This verse serves as an introduction to the ensuing dialogue between Dhritarashtra and Sanjaya, which provides the narrative framework for the Bhagavad Gita. It sets the stage for Sanjaya to describe the events of the battlefield to Dhritarashtra, who cannot see for himself due to his blindness.
